“What gets measured gets managed” is often attributed to Peter Drucker. A short Google and it seems it wasn’t Drucker. While it rings true, as people strive to meet their performance targets, they can lose sight of what is ethical or what really needs doing. The “No data, no problem” mantra adopted by the European Commission Women in Science Team in 1998 highlighted the many challenges women face in STEM careers and catalyzed a shift in data collection and management. And the Athena project that morphed into the Athena SWAN awards, in 1999, focused on women’s academic careers, highlighting hurdles. Let your data inform what you know needs doing.
